What's New With Us
If you like my travel vlogs, you are in luck this month. We have been on a constant trek northward, and I have documented our hops. Each video provides a look at the anchorages and stopovers, plus highlights and scenery from our journey between them.
Our goal for this boating season was to reach the Broughton Archipelago near the northwest tip of Vancouver Island. Anne has long dreamed of exploring this especially scenic region of the BC coast.
“Broughton Archipelago Park is B.C.’s largest marine park. It consists of a wonderful collection of dozens of undeveloped islands and islets situated at the mouth of Knight Inlet on the west side of Queen Charlotte Strait near the north end of Vancouver Island.” https://bcparks.ca/broughton-archipelago-park
We have made it! The boating up here is spectacular, with reams of gorgeous anchorages to choose from and far fewer crowds than down south. There is plentiful wildlife, and the fishing and crabbing are top notch. We are eating well!
Wildlife sighting highlights have included multiple grizzly bears, black bear, wolves dolphins, humpback whales, and Dall’s porpoises. We also see a scad of eagles, ocean/shore birds, and and various other marine life.
Are you interested in seeing what lives below the waters? Check out Anne’s recent blog post, Underwater Photography For Everyone: No Fancy Gear Needed! She has many examples of the beauty that exists just below the water. We love to take the dinghy out at low tide and explore along the shoreline.
As long as the weather holds, we plan to spend most of August exploring the Broughtons. Being more north and closer to the open Pacific Ocean, summers in the Broughtons are cooler, shorter and wetter than in the more protected southeast region of Vancouver Island. The trade off is more opportunities for solitude and feeling a closer connection to nature. Stay tuned.
